Hubert Wessel

Hubert V. “Hub” Wessel, 92, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 5th, 2015 with his family by his side. Hub was a happy man with a positive attitude and a loving father who led his 5 children by example. He was a faithful husband to his wife Mary for 66 years, a loyal friend to many, and a devout Catholic. Hub was the 2nd of 8 children born December 19, 1922, to Lorena Schaftlein and Virgil Wessel. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1946. On April 7th, 1943, his ship, the destroyer USS Aaron Ward was bombed and sunk at Guadalcanal. His first employment after returning home was with the L& N Railroad office where he met his wife. Ten years later, he became manager of Carricato Liquors from the day they opened until he retired 40 years later. At the same time, he was in sales with the B & W Specialty House. He was a member of the Torro Club for 60 years, American Legion Dixie Post 220, St. Helen/Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, and served on the board of the Shively Area Business Association for many years. He was a long-time volunteer for the St. Vincent dePaul Soup Kitchen, delivered Meals on Wheels, and worked in the Shively Area Ministries food pantry. Hub was preceded in death by his siblings, Norman, Herman, and Thelma. He is survived by his wife, Mary, and his children: Donna Metcalf (Grant), John (Lisa Pickett), Carol McCardwell (Mike), Bruce (Sharon), Brian (Eliana). He is also survived by his siblings Bob and Art Wessel, Ethel Bohannon and Betty Schonburg. Hub loved his grandchildren: Shannon Derrick (Brad), Mark Metcalf (Brittany), Sean and Megan McCardwell, Carol Taylor, Amber, Chris, Brooke , Adam, Veronica, and Lucas Wessel and great-grandchildren: Everett, Owen, & Alden Derrick, Victoria Metcalf, and Gavin Toadvine. Christian Mass of Celebration will be Saturday, August 8 at 10:00 a.m. at Mary Queen of Peace, 4005 Dixie Highway with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Ratterman Grand Chapels, 4832 Cane Run Road. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Vincent dePaul Society, Mary Queen of Peace, Shively Area Ministries, Hosparus or Mass of the Air.
