Geneva Frances Schulten

Schulten, Geneva Frances, passed away Friday September 2, 2016. The earth weeps as the heavens rejoice. She was born November 5, 1919 in a little house on Pirtle Street in Louisville, Ky. The 2nd child of Edward and Lorena (Goodfriend) Schulten. She has greatly missed her parents, her brother, Joe, who was her best friend, and her sister and brother-in-law, Verena and Bill Estes, all of whom left many years ago. Geneva graduated from the 8th grade at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church School. She chose to continue her education, and graduated from Ahrens Girls’ Trade (High) School in 1937. After high school, Geneva began work as a companion/caregiver for Mrs. Sable and then for her daughter, Mrs. Block, which she continued to do until their deaths, at which time she retired in 1984. She then returned to the home her parents had owned since she was 4 yrs. old to relax, but again wound up as a caregiver for her sister, and then for her brother, until their deaths. Through all of that time, Geneva continued to be a true and faithful parishioner at St. Anthony’s Church, until her heart was broken by its closing, at which time she became a member of Good Shepherd parish. Geneva was a hard worker, and she enjoyed her work. Working as a ladies’ companion allowed her the opportunity to travel, which she really enjoyed, particularly when she went with Mrs. Block to Hawaii. After she retired, she especially enjoyed yard work, and loved caring for her roses. She also loved music, and had been known to burst into singing with the music playing at Kroger or Kmart. She loved life. Geneva will be greatly missed for her wonderful humor, her good nature, and her kindness by her niece and nephew, Deanna Estes-Culler and Everett Culler, by her neighbors and friends, JoAnn and Donnie Karnes, by her “other family” who are descendants of Mrs. Sable and Mrs. Block, and by the many friends and family whose lives she touched. While Geneva loved flowers, we understand that memorial contributions are preferable to some people, and so we ask that those be made in Geneva’s name to the Mass of the Air, which was especially important to her as she aged, or if you would prefer, memorials would also be appreciated by The Little Sisters of the Poor, or to the Neighborhood House Senior Program, where Geneva spent many days having fun among friends. A Mass of Resurrection will be 10am Wednesday at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 3511 Rudd Ave., with Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2pm to 4pm and 5pm to 8pm Tuesday at J.B. Ratterman & Sons, 2114. W. Market Street.
