James Ross Bundy

Bundy, James Ross, 95, passed away Thursday December 5, 2013 at his residence. When Jim was born in 1918, it was a year of bad pneumonia and flu (Swine Flu). He had pneumonia at one year old and almost died they say. It left scars on his lungs. When he was called up for the Army in World War II, he was rejected because of the scars. They told him to go back working at defense plant B.F. Goodrich where he worked. He still thought he would have made a good soldier. At age 16 his family lived in Tunnel Hill, Kentucky about 1 ½ miles from Elizabethtown. He became interested in hunting when his uncle gave him 6 steel traps. He became very adept at catching wild game; sold opossum, fox, raccoons, and then rabbits at Hawkins Grocery Store in E-town. They share cropped an old poor farm. There were 6 kids in the family and they were having a hard time making ends meet. His Dad got him a job working for the W.P.A. at $5 a week. You hear a lot of bad things about the W.P.A., but it probably kept them from starving. They worked hard in the gang in making the road wider that runs from Dixie Highway to Colesburg. They used grubbing hoes and axes. He had to leave high school after 2 years to take the job. Later at about 20 years of age, he moved to Louisville and worked in a restaurant for 4 years. He married a beautiful girl, Anne. They had two children, Pat Sheehan and Eric Bundy, who took good care of him; along with his son-in-law, Larry Sheehan. He worked for American Standard for 34 years as a machinist. The last 4 years he was foreman of the shop. This may not sound like much of an accomplishment to some, but from $5 a week at W.P.A. to foreman of the machine shop of one of the largest factories in the county meant a lot to him. He has been retired 25 years. He spent most of his time in his backyard garden and fishing and hunting with his good friends, Bill Hughes and Jackie Coy. "By the way an old possum don't taste too bad if baked with sweet potatoes around it like my mother fixed it. If you don't have anything else to eat, it tastes pretty good." He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Anne L. Bundy; parents, Denton, Sr. and Annie Bundy; brother, Rex Bundy; and sister, Onie Bundy. He is survived by his son, Eric R. Bundy; daughter Pat Sheehan (Lawrence); brother, Denton Bundy, Jr. of Jeffersonville, IN; sisters, Martha Lee Stapp of Georgia and Jean Rector (Raymond) of Smiths Grove, KY; grandson, Todd Sheehan (Joanna); granddaughter, Carrie B. Murff (Andrew); and great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Tyler Sheehan and Elijah and Jeremiah Murff. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 10, at Ratterman Grand Chapels, 4832 Cane Run Road, with burial in Louisville Memorial Gardens West. Visitation will be 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday.
